Begg, Alexander merchant: 1839-1897. From Quebec City to Red River, 1867; first merchant to bring in goods of Canadian manufacture; connected with two ephemeral Winnipeg newspapers, Manitoba Trade Review, 1871 and Daily Herald, 1877; deputy treasurer of Manitoba, 1878-1884; immigration agent for CPR for some years; died in Victoria (Wolfenden, "Begg vs. Begg" in British Columbia Historical Quarterly, 1937; Begg, Ten years in Winnipeg). // Nursey, Walter R.: 1847-1927. Arrived at Fort Francis, Ontario, 1874; special commissioner for the district of Keewatin during the small-pox epidemic, 1877; published Manitoba Telegraph, and with Alexander Begg (younger) launched Daily Herald, and tried to float the Manitoba Times Printing Co.; other journalistic and literary ventures were Quiz, Manitoba Merchant, and Manitoba Celebrities, 1877-1878; deputy minister of agriculture, 1878; provincial auditor, 1879-1889; held other special commissions from Manitoba government; later inspector of public libraries in Ontario (Morgan, Canadian men and women of the time, 1912; Begg, Ten years in Winnipeg; Robertson, A political manual of the province of Manitoba; Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography). // Advertisements precede title-page.
